Musical terms

On this page

Use these terms to connect the count you hear with the settings you choose.

Pulse and BPM

The pulse is the recurring timing reference. BPM means beats per minute; read the note unit beside it. In 6/8 that unit is a dotted quarter note. In 7/8 it is an eighth note, while main clicks follow the chosen groups.

Subdivisions and Between beats

Subdivisions divide the meter-defined beat into smaller positions. Native divisions follow its note values. Borrowed divisions split it into a contrasting count, such as triplets in a quarter-note beat or duplets in a dotted-quarter beat. Between beats omits the main-beat clicks while retaining the selected off-beat positions.

Straight, swing and Shuffle

Straight divides eligible pairs evenly. Swing delays the second position in the selected eighth or sixteenth pair. Shuffle is this product’s 2/3 setting. Actual musical swing can use different spacing; the preset is a comparison task, not a rule for every performance.

Accent, Soft and Mute

Accent, Normal, Soft and Mute are per-beat click states. Accent sound changes whether beats marked Accent use an emphasized or regular click, including explicit Accent overrides. It does not change the assigned beat states. Mute silences the corresponding click; its position still belongs to the running bar.

Gap and count-in

A Gap routine alternates click bars and silent bars. A count-in supplies bars before the practice begins. Neither silence nor a timer tells the app how accurately a musician played.
