Practice tools

Choose a practice tool

Practice adds three optional tools to the main metronome: Speed Trainer, Gap Trainer and Session. Choose a tool, set its values and meter, then press Start. Use the back button at the top of setup to return to the main metronome.

Tap an editable part of the setup sentence, then adjust it with the ruler, −/+ buttons or number field. Meter also opens from its tile. Share practice copies or shares the current setup.

Each tool runs in the open page, with no account or saved history. Changes to the setup and results from a run disappear when the page is reloaded or closed; an entry link reopens its starting setup.

Speed Trainer

Speed Trainer changes the tempo after complete blocks of bars. It can increase or decrease the BPM, and it always plays a complete final block at the target tempo before finishing.

Speed settings

  • Start BPM is the first active tempo, from 30 to 300 BPM.
  • Target BPM is the finishing tempo, from 30 to 300 BPM.
  • Step changes the tempo by 1, 2, 5 or 10 BPM after each block.
  • Bars sets each block to 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 complete bars before the next tempo change.
  • Count-in adds 0 to 4 preparation bars before the active practice begins.

Example: start at 70 BPM, target 100 BPM, change by 5 BPM every 4 bars and use a 1-bar count-in. The trainer plays four full bars at each tempo, reaches exactly 100 BPM and completes four full bars there before ending.

See the illustrated 60 → 90 BPM setup.

Gap Trainer

Gap Trainer alternates click bars with silent bars. The visual beat continues through the silent section. Keep playing, then use the returning click to hear whether your pulse stayed steady.

Gap settings

  • BPM sets 30 to 300 beats per minute.
  • Click sets 1 to 16 audible bars.
  • Silent sets 1 to 16 silent bars.
  • Rounds repeats the click-and-silent pattern 1 to 50 times.
  • Until stopped repeats the pattern until you press Stop instead of using a round limit.
  • Count-in adds 0 to 4 audible preparation bars.

Example: choose four click bars, one silent bar and four rounds. Follow the clicks for four bars, keep the pulse through the silent bar and listen for the click to return. The session finishes after the final silent bar.

See the illustrated Silent state in a four-round routine.

Bar-based and timed sessions

Session keeps one tempo for a chosen number of practice bars or minutes. The count-in comes first and does not use any of the selected practice time.

Tap minutes or bars in the setup sentence to switch units. Adjust the length using the ruler, −/+ buttons or number field. Each unit retains its own value while the page remains open. Tap the number in the setup sentence to edit the length without switching units.

Session settings

  • BPM sets 30 to 300 beats per minute.
  • Count-in adds 0 to 4 preparation bars.
  • Bars runs for exactly 1 to 999 practice bars.
  • Minutes runs for 1 to 180 minutes and finishes on the next main beat after the selected time has passed.

Bar example: a 16-bar session with a 1-bar count-in plays the preparation bar and then exactly 16 practice bars.

Time example: a 10-minute session starts timing after the count-in and stops on the next main beat after ten minutes of practice.

Meter, sound and click units

Practice copies the selected meter, grouping, Subdivisions, Swing, Accents, Accent sound and volume from the main metronome. Available meters are 2/2, 3/2, 4/2, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, 3/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 8/8, 9/8, 11/8 and 12/8.

BPM follows the drawn note shown beside it: half note, quarter note, eighth note or dotted quarter note. Use Subdivisions to choose which beat and between-beat positions you hear without changing the tempo or bar length. Choose Main beats for one click per meter-defined beat; Between beats leaves those main beats silent. Swing choices appear only when they can change those clicks. If a Swing choice no longer fits after you change Meter or Subdivisions, Browser Metronome keeps one that does fit or returns to Straight. Your device’s media volume controls the final loudness.

During and after practice

The running screen shows the current tempo, section and progress. Gap Trainer marks silent sections while the visual beat continues. Pause stops the practice where it is; Resume continues from there. Stop returns to setup and asks before discarding completed practice.

Natural completion shows a summary. Choose START AGAIN to repeat the same setup or SETUP to change it. From setup, use the back button at the top to return to ordinary playback.

Sharing a Practice setup

On a Speed, Gap or Session setup screen, choose Share practice. The resulting link includes supported setup settings and opens the matching setup without starting playback.

The link does not include sound choice, device volume, whether playback is running or paused, the current beat or completed progress. Changes made after sharing stay in the open page until you choose Share practice again to create an updated link.

Using other apps and working offline

Playback is most reliable while Practice is open on screen. It may continue when you switch apps or lock the screen, but the phone, browser or another audio app can interrupt it. Return and follow the message on screen. Resume continues from a confirmed paused position. If the sequence could not be preserved, Start begins again from your settings, with a new count-in and no completed progress.

If you cannot hear the click, raise both the metronome volume slider and your device’s media volume. In a browser tab, you may also need to turn off Silent Mode. Keeping the screen awake works only on supported devices while Practice remains visible.

After one successful online visit, some browsers save the files needed for offline use. Adding Browser Metronome to a Home Screen is optional. See offline requirements and recovery before relying on it without a connection.

Keep the metronome playing in another tab or the Home Screen app: follow the setup, installation and recovery steps.
