  1. Choose a comfortable passage and a tempo at which it is already accurate.
  2. Listen for four bars and notice where each beat sits in your movement.
  3. Continue through one silent bar without speeding up or holding back.
  4. When the click returns, observe whether you are early, late or aligned.
  5. Repeat four rounds before changing anything.

Listen

Listen for the returning downbeat. Do not correct at the last moment.

Check

Listen to the three returning clicks in this four-round run. Repeat the setup until your next downbeat meets each return without a sudden correction. Then lengthen the silent section while your playing stays relaxed.

Adjust

Shorten the silence or return to continuous clicks if the downbeat repeatedly arrives early or late.

Question for the next practice

Were you early, late or aligned when the click returned?

  1. Play the passage accurately three times without the trainer and choose that tempo as the start.
  2. Set a target 20–30 BPM higher, not your absolute maximum.
  3. Use a 5 BPM change every four bars.
  4. During each block, keep the same movement and subdivision.
  5. Stop if errors repeat, the pulse becomes uneven or tension rises.

Listen

Listen for uneven spacing as a new bar block begins.

Check

The ramp is ready to progress when the notes stay accurate, the rhythm stays steady and your movement stays relaxed through the final block. If reaching the target makes any of those worse, lower the target and try again.

Adjust

Stop and lower the target if errors repeat, movement tightens or the pulse becomes uneven.

Question for the next practice

Which tempo step first changed accuracy, spacing or ease?

  1. Set 6/8 at 60 BPM and choose 8ths under Subdivisions so all six eighth-note positions sound.
  2. Count “ONE two three FOUR five six” for four bars.
  3. Clap only ONE and FOUR while continuing to say all six counts.
  4. Play your passage while feeling two large beats, each divided into three.
  5. Switch Subdivisions to Main beats and keep the smaller subdivisions internally.

Listen

ONE and FOUR begin the two large beats; the next ONE begins a new bar.

Check

Progress when the passage stays steady with Subdivisions set to Main beats. The six eighth-note positions should remain even, and the next downbeat should stay clear without counting aloud.

Adjust

Return to audible eighths and count ONE two three FOUR five six before removing smaller clicks.

Question for the next practice

Did the six eighth notes stay evenly spaced when only two clicks sounded?

  1. Listen to the one-bar count-in, then count one, two, three, four.
  2. Clap once per beat for four bars. Keep saying the numbers through the next four bars.
  3. Repeat a short four-beat phrase for the remaining eight bars. Keep the return to one the same distance away.

Listen

Listen for a stretched last beat or a rushed return to one.

Check

Repeat four bars without adding a pause before one. Notice the same spacing when the phrase repeats.

Adjust

Stop and lower BPM if clapping and counting pull apart. Use counting alone before repeating the phrase.

Question for the next practice

Did the space from four to one match the space from one to two?

  1. Choose a short phrase you already know. Start with the suggested 60 BPM or adjust before Start.
  2. Repeat it three times. Listen for uneven spacing and notice whether the movement stays relaxed.
  3. If it stays controlled, raise BPM by five and repeat. If an error repeats or tension rises, stop and lower BPM.

Listen

Listen to the phrase, not only the number. A faster tempo is useful only while the task stays controlled.

Check

Name a starting BPM at which three consecutive repetitions remain accurate and evenly spaced.

Adjust

Keep the phrase shorter or lower the starting BPM. Change the tempo only after the original task is repeatable.

Question for the next practice

Which BPM let the phrase stay accurate and relaxed?

  1. Count one-and, two-and, three-and, four-and with the eighth-note clicks for four bars.
  2. Clap the numbers while continuing to say every and for four bars.
  3. Stop, change Subdivisions to Main beats and repeat the count. Keep each and halfway between numbers.

Listen

The and sits halfway between main beats in this Straight 4/4 task. Do not crowd it towards the next number.

Check

Keep the same spacing for four bars when only the main beats sound.

Adjust

Return to audible eighths or count without clapping if the and drifts.

Question for the next practice

Did the and move when its click was removed?

  2. Count one-and, two-and, three-and, four-and. The clicks sound on the and positions.
  3. Clap each number for eight bars while the click answers between claps. Do not turn a click into one.

Listen

Hear a regular clap-click alternation. A click is still an off-beat even when it is the first sound you hear.

Check

Maintain the count through eight bars without shifting the numbers onto the clicks.

Adjust

Stop, choose audible eighths and rebuild the count. Return to Between beats once the numbers feel placed.

Question for the next practice

Did one stay between clicks, or did a click become the downbeat?

  1. Count ONE two, THREE four, FIVE six seven for four bars. The three drawn groups are 2+2+3.
  2. Tap all seven eighth-note positions while keeping the group-start clicks in their places.
  3. Stop and choose another supported 7/8 grouping. Count its groups aloud before starting again.

Listen

The eighth notes remain evenly spaced. A three-note group lasts longer than a two-note group; do not make the three group clicks equally spaced.

Check

Repeat four bars without squeezing the three-note group or adding time at the bar line.

Adjust

Keep the default 2+2+3 grouping and count without tapping. Add tapping after the full seven-count cycle is stable.

Question for the next practice

Did the three-note group keep its extra eighth note?

  1. Start the 4/4 task at 80 quarter-note BPM. Count one, two, three, four for four bars.
  2. Stop and use the meter table below to compare 6/8. Its BPM counts dotted-quarter beats; each contains three eighth notes.
  3. For 7/8, the BPM counts eighth notes while the main clicks mark unequal groups. Say the full grouping before comparing tempos.

Listen

Compare the named unit, not the BPM number alone. Four quarter-note beats, two dotted-quarter beats and unequal eighth-note groups are different bar structures.

Check

Explain which note the BPM counts in 4/4, 6/8 and 7/8, and count one bar of each without adding a beat.

Adjust

Work with 4/4 and 6/8 first. Say the unit name before reading the number.

Question for the next practice

Which note does the BPM count, and where does the bar begin again?

  1. Check 4/4, 120 quarter-note BPM, 8ths and Shuffle at the eighth level. Count ONE-and with the long-short clicks for four bars.
  2. Stop, choose Straight and repeat for four bars. The two positions now divide each beat evenly.
  3. Return to Shuffle and repeat. Keep the numbers equally spaced while the and moves later.

Listen

Compare the spacing inside a beat. The numbers stay steady; Shuffle delays the second eighth-note position.

Check

Switch between the two settings without moving the next main beat or treating Shuffle as two equal counts.

Adjust

Lower BPM manually or listen without clapping. Compare only one subdivision level at a time.

  1. Check the pattern: one Accent, two Normal, three Soft, four Mute. Start and say all four numbers for four bars.
  2. Clap all four beats, including the silent fourth. Listen to the different support on the first three.
  3. Stop and change only one beat state. Repeat the same count and compare what the new support changes.

Listen

Mute leaves a place in the bar. It does not shorten the bar or move the following downbeat.

Check

Count through the muted position and meet the next one without shortening the last space.

Adjust

Make beat four Normal again, or count without clapping. Remove support only after the full bar stays steady.

Question for the next practice

Was the muted beat still the same length as the sounded beats?
